What is it?
The 2011 9-4X is Saab's new entry
into the hot midsize-crossover segment and is the platform mate to the
Cadillac SRX. Like the 9-5, the 9-4X draws styling cues from the Aero X
concept with a deep, three-hole grille and ice-block light housings
along with traditional Saab touches such as the wraparound-effect
windshield and hockey-stick beltline.
Inside the five-passenger
cabin, the push-button ignition sits between the front seats and the
driver-oriented dashboard has mesh-style air vents. Upgraded options
included a Bose sound system, a rear entertainment system with dual
eight-inch integrated front seatback screens and a panoramic sunroof.
Customers
can choose between two engines: a 3.0-liter, 265-hp V6 in base and
Premium trims or a 2.8-liter, 300-hp turbocharged V6 in the
range-topping Aero XWD model. Both are mated to a six-speed automatic
transmission. Base and Premium versions are offered in front-wheel drive
or with Saab's XWD all-wheel-drive system.
In addition to the
upgraded turbo engine and XWD, the Aero also gets Saab DriveSense
standard to adjust suspension dampers, throttle response and
transmission shift points among comfort, sport and eco settings.
What is it like to drive?
Our
9-4X Aero tester was impressive during our afternoon. Considering that
it's a two-ton-plus crossover, it handles incredibly well.
The
suspension in default comfort mode is still stiff to benefit cornering
composure, but impacts from bumps remain sufficiently damped. The
electric power steering is weighty and responsive, and the brakes return
confident stopping power. We did slot the DriveSense system into sport
mode and noticed the turbo V6's throttle response liven up and
satisfying quick gearbox shifts via the steering-wheel paddles. The
engine pulls strong and smooth throughout the revs.
Our only major complaint is the large blind spots caused by the 9-4X's thick C-pillars.
Do I want it?
If
you're Saab fan in need of room, you almost certainly do. But anyone
shopping this segment would be well served by at least heading to a Saab
dealership for a test drive. It's one of the sportier-driving midsize
crossovers you'll come across, and that's a good thing.
